Four police officers who were part of the first shift of the 65 members in the International Disaster Relief Team, held a press conference. They had been in action in New Zealand after the massive earthquake and returned home in the morning of the 3rd. Superintendent Katada, from National Police Agency and who was also the deputy leader of the team, said with deep regret, “We made our utmost effort to save even one life but we didn’t find any survivors. It was bitterly disappointing.”

He revealed that, during the operation, a letter was delivered to the team from one of the family members of the missing Japanese. It said, “Every time I saw and heard about the help that the New Zealand people and the rescuers from around the world were giving, I understood why my daughter wanted to study in this country.” “It touched me and I became determined to do more in a positive way”, he said.
He went on to stress, “I am confident that the second shift will succeed our wishes and do their best.” The other three officers maintained their somber expressions and talked of their expectations on the second shift.
